Solution-Focused Brief Therapy FAQs

Can organizations such as clinics, hospitals and health services do group enrollments for their staff?

Yes. Clinics, hospitals, health systems, community services and other organizations can enquire about group enrollment for the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy course. Psychwire offers organizational pricing and support based on enrollment size and requirements. Contact the team through Organization Enquiries to discuss your staff numbers, payment arrangements and any administrative support you need.

Who is Psychwire’s Solution-Focused Brief Therapy course suitable for?

Psychwire’s Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) course is designed for mental health and health professionals, including social workers, counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists, mental health nurses, psychiatrists, family therapists, addiction professionals, school counsellors, and allied health therapists . It also welcomes coaches and other helping professionals. Suitability depends on your responsibilities and professional scope, rather than a single job title.

Do I need prior training in SFBT to take this course?

No. The course is set at beginner level, so newly qualified clinicians and students can start here. Experienced practitioners can also use it to sharpen their questioning and to integrate SFBT into an existing approach such as CBT, motivational interviewing or case management. The filmed roleplays and clinical commentary show how experienced SFBT practitioners handle unclear goals and clients who feel stuck.

Is this Solution-Focused Brief Therapy course suitable for social workers?

Yes. Psychwire's SFBT course is approved for 8 ASWB ACE continuing education credits for social workers, and two of its three instructors, Dr Johnny Kim and Dr Cynthia Franklin, are licensed clinical social workers and leading SFBT researchers. Social workers use SFBT in child protection, case management, schools, hospitals and community services, and the course includes a full section on working with mandated and involuntary clients. Check that your state board accepts ASWB ACE credit for online courses.

Is this SFBT course relevant for roles that do not provide psychotherapy?

In most cases, yes. The course is intended for health professionals, allied health professionals, school counsellors, pastoral counsellors, coaches as well as therapists. If your work involves supportive conversations, care planning or helping people identify personal goals, consider how the training fits those responsibilities.

Can SFBT be used in brief or time-limited settings such as schools, hospitals and primary care?

Yes. SFBT was designed to be brief, and it's widely used where time with each person is limited, including schools, healthcare, community mental health, behavioural health and brief intervention services. Because each conversation is complete in itself, SFBT techniques can be useful even in a single session. The Solution-Focused Brief Therapy course includes practical guidance for using SFBT in short, structured sessions.

Johnny Kim explains more how Solution-Focused Brief Therapy can be used in schools in this Q&A - Solution-Focused Brief Therapy in Schools.

Does SFBT work with mandated or reluctant clients?

Yes. SFBT is well known for engaging people who didn't choose to attend, such as clients referred by courts, child protection services or schools. It focuses on what the client wants and builds on their own strengths rather than confronting resistance. Section 4 of the course covers practical strategies for working collaboratively with mandated clients and with people who feel stuck, disengaged or demoralised.

Cynthia Franklin discusses this more in the Q&A Understanding Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.

Will completing this course qualify me as a certified SFBT therapist?

No. This course gives you a certificate of completion and up to 8 CE/CPD hours, not a professional credential or licence to practise as a certified SFBT therapist. It is a strong foundation for using solution-focused techniques and should be represented as professional development rather than a separate therapist certification.
