The DBT Comprehensive online program has been built to provide an exceptional learning experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy for mental health professionals. The online program is intended to provide an experience similar to the well-established Behavioral Tech in-person course offerings by providing comprehensive training via an exciting online learning format. Who is this program intended for?

The program is intended for participation only by persons who have the education and licensing required to deliver mental health treatment, and who are committed to working as part of a DBT consultation team. This includes, but is not limited to; general practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, mental health nurses and occupational therapists. This program is available to graduate students, so long as they meet the application requirements for the pathway to which they are applying. Graduate students interested in other DBT training can alternatively choose to take the DBT Skills or DBT Skills for Adolescents & Families course. This program is not appropriate for wellness coaches, members of the general public, or others who do not possess the credentials to provide clinical mental health treatment.

Are there eligibility requirements for each pathway? Which pathway should I take?

This program of study offers three distinct pathways: the Foundational, Intensive, and Intensive Plus. The eligibility requirements and prerequisites vary based on the pathway in which you are enrolling. Foundational: This pathway is for individuals who are current members of established and functioning DBT teams with Intensively-trained, senior members. Your application will be evaluated based on the following criteria: You are a mental health professional in one of the following roles: DBT individual therapist DBT skills trainer DBT pharmacotherapist DBT case manager You work in an active DBT program and participate in a DBT Consultation Team that has been in existence for more than a year You are actively involved in clinical work and can immediately apply what is learned to real-life situations You have a mentor on your DBT team who, at least two years ago, has completed Intensive training with Behavioral Tech or other comprehensive DBT training that included instruction in establishing a DBT team and program You hold the legal credentials required in your local jurisdiction to provide mental health treatment Intensive: This pathway is for teams of individuals who are, or intend, to function as a DBT program/consultation team. To qualify for this pathway, you must: Enroll in the program with members of your DBT consultation team Hold the legal credentials required in your local jurisdiction to provide mental health treatment Intensive Plus: The DBT Intensive Plus pathway is intended for mental health providers who do not have access to a DBT Consultation Team. The Team Leader is essentially the point of contact for us and the team. They will sign off on the homework checklist for each team member, confirming that the work has been done. It would be expected that your team will be meeting regularly and discussing the homework assignments and working on them as a team. We would not anticipate you needing much additional time for this role as everything is discussed in your regular meetings and your monthly consultations with your trainer.

What is the mentor requirement for the Foundational pathway?

Foundational pathway only- What is a Foundational Mentor? A DBT Foundational mentor is an experienced DBT team member who completed Intensive/Comprehensive training at least 2 years ago and agrees to meet regularly with a Foundational participant to provide support and corrective feedback. Does everyone who takes the 16 week online Foundational course need to have a mentor? No. The requirement to have a mentor is specific to those participants who are enrolled in the Foundational pathway. Participants enrolled in the Intensive or Intensive Plus pathways do not need to have a mentor. Why are Foundational participants required to have a mentor? The Foundational learning pathway is intended for persons who are joining or are current members of established and functioning DBT teams with comprehensively-trained, senior members. Upon completion of the 16 weeks of online learning, each Foundational participant must continue developing and applying his or her DBT knowledge and skills under the guidance of their mentor. In the Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways, this guidance and mentorship is provided via the DBT consultation sessions with the DBT expert. What are the qualifications to serve as a mentor? To be a mentor, the senior DBT team member will: Have completed Intensive training (or a comprehensive equivalent) Intensive Training includes completing the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Training from BTECH or its affiliates. Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways only- What is a DBT consultation team? A DBT consultation team is a group of DBT providers who work together to treat clients. A team has 4 to 8 people, and it could include a combination of providers who may have different roles, professional credentials (e.g., psychologists also working on a team with a psychiatrist), and/or work in different locations. Do I need a team to do DBT? Why? Yes, you need a team! The DBT consultation team is a required part of the treatment. In order to be faithful to the DBT model and to truly do DBT, you need to be on a consultation team. You can refer to Marsha Linehan’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder for a description of the important functions that the team serves in this treatment. Why is DBT a team-based treatment? There can be immense pressure on a DBT therapist, often created by clients’ risk of suicide or self-harm. The DBT team is there to make sure that the therapist is not pushed out of doing competent treatment by pressure from the client, from themselves, or from the demands of the program pushing them outside of their limits. How often do people meet with their DBT consultation teams? A DBT consultation team meets every week. This is true regardless of whether they are participating in the DBT Comprehensive Online program or are actively practicing DBT with your patients. What does a typical agenda include for a DBT consultation team meeting? A typical meeting might start with 5-10 minutes of mindfulness practice. The team will spend a few minutes to review issues and tasks from the week before, and then the focus turns to the needs of the team members. They will behaviorally define their problem or question, then ask the team for help assessing or solving the problem. A DBT consultation team meeting might also include video review to aid the development of members’ skills.

Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways only- What is consultation with a DBT expert? During consultation, you are paired with a DBT expert to discuss your clinical, team, and program goals and the challenges you face. The DBT expert is your consultant who provides guidance and recommendations to you and your team. Consultation sessions follow the same basic structure as DBT treatment sessions: the DBT expert collaboratively works with you and your team to set an agenda and prioritize targets. Then, consultation questions related to the targets are developed and clarified. The DBT expert and team then use assessment strategies to gain a clear picture of the clinical, team, or programmatic issue(s). A dialectical approach is then used to determine and implement solutions. Both acceptance and change-based strategies are used to engage the team members in active problem-solving. How often does the DBT expert attend team meetings during the program? The DBT expert will join your team meetings once per month, but the exact schedule and frequency will vary based on the pathway in which you are enrolled and in which phase of the program you are participating. Can I get consultation without participating in the DBT Comprehensive online program? Yes! How will I be placed on a DBT consultation team? The Intensive Plus pathway allows individuals without an existing DBT consultation team to participate in DBT Comprehensive training by matching them into a team with others who need a team. Teams are formed when we match participants to the day and time that is most convenient for them to meet for the weekly team meetings and DBT expert consultations. This is dependant on the total number of participants enrolled in the Intensive Plus pathway, and their availability and timezone, along with our DBT expert trainers availability. We will contact you directly regarding your availability and preference for meeting times. Though your selected intake will be considered, your start date is not confirmed until we’ve placed you in an online team. Who will be on my team? Your team will consist of others like you who are interested in becoming part of a DBT team. Your team composition may include members from all over the world. Can I change teams? Participants may request to change teams up until one month before the program start date. What is the time commitment each week?

Participants should expect to spend at least 2.5 hours each week to complete the Comprehensive DBT online training; however, since the program offers three distinct learning pathways, each with their own specific sequence, the actual amount of time will vary. The weekly time commitment may be higher during certain weeks of the program. For example, in the Intensive Plus pathway you will need to allow extra time to complete the 7 weeks of Team Formation sessions. Each week participants engage in a variety of learning activities, such as watching videos, participating in the online forum, completing readings and homework exercises, and meeting with his or her DBT consultation team.

Is there homework to be completed during the program?

There are readings and exercises woven throughout the program to assist you in practicing your new skills and implementing the lessons. Some of the readings and homework can be completed concurrently with the Foundational online course; other homework cannot be completed until the online course is complete and you are in the additional homework period. There is a document in the library titled Part A Foundational Homework Assignments which you should print out and use as a checklist to tick off the assignments as you complete them.

The online program is intended to provide an experience similar to the well-established Behavioral Tech in-person course offerings by providing comprehensive training via an online learning format. It is intended for mental health providers who want to provide DBT within the context of a full DBT program with all its modes of treatment. In the Comprehensive program, you will learn about structuring individual treatment sessions, targets of treatment, case conceptualization, suicide risk assessment and management, and other protocols and strategies that are part of DBT. Throughout this remote learning experience, you’ll hone your clinical performance by learning through didactics, demonstrations of treatment, practice, and recorded discussions of expert DBT therapists that bring to life DBT theory and strategies. You’ll learn how to help clients engage in new behaviors, generate hope and maintain commitment, and troubleshoot and address the problems that may hinder those commitments. The DBT Comprehensive Online training program will enable you to build clinical mastery in the application of DBT and to establish an effective DBT practice. In contrast, the DBT Skills online course has a specific focus on the four DBT skills modules. It is intended for a broader audience who may or may not work with persons who have complex, severe behaviors. Participants who take the online DBT Skills course may go on to teach DBT Skills training groups but are not prepared to provide the full treatment.

How is the Comprehensive DBT online program different from in-person comprehensive trainings with Behavioral Tech?

The learning objectives of each pathway of the DBT Comprehensive program are the same as the learning objectives of the corresponding in-person, comprehensive DBT trainings offered by Behavioral Tech. Only the DBT Comprehensive online program offers a learning pathway for individuals who don’t already have a DBT consultation team. When determining which format is right for you, you should consider your learning style, the time you can commit to learning, and the training resources available for you. Some practitioners prefer to learn in a live, in-person environment, while others prefer the flexibility of an online program. Some practitioners may not be able to travel and find that online training is the only option available to them. Or, some practitioners want the flexibility of a longer program of study, while others want to complete their training as fast as possible. Our online training can be completed alongside full-time work commitments. Both the in-person and online courses are appropriate for those wanting to learn the full DBT treatment model, how to develop a DBT program, or want to earn didactic hours toward DBT certification.

The course content will be released on a week-by-week basis, and you can access the content throughout the week at a time that is convenient for you. You can work through the lessons, readings, and exercises at your own pace during the program. Intensive : The Foundational online course content will be released on a week-by-week basis, and you can access the content during the week at a time that is convenient for you. You can work through the lessons, readings, and exercises at your own pace during the program. During the next part of your program, you must be available at a specific time, along with all members of your DBT consultation team, once per month to participate in the consultation session with your DBT expert. This phase of the program begins after the Foundational Course and continues through the remaining twelve months of the program. Can international trainees participate?

We welcome participants from all over the world, as all the course content is intended to be accessed online. There is no requirement to travel to the US.

There are required readings for this online training. The first three books in this list are included with the cost of the program and will be available in your course library as downloadable PDFs on the course start date. Are the learning materials or textbooks available in languages other than English?

The DBT Comprehensive program is only offered in English. Additionally, all handouts available in the online Library are only offered in English. Participants wishing to own Marsha Linehan’s books in languages other than English should contact Guilford Press about the availability of authorized translations. As of May 2018, Guilford Press indicated that translated titles are in progress or already available in languages such as Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish. Can I get documentation that I participated in this training?

Yes. Each participant who meets all of the course completion requirements will receive a letter of completion at the end of the program. This document will be emailed to you as a PDF a few weeks after the program ends and will include the course name, your name, and the dates of the program. Participants seeking continuing education (CE) credit will receive CE documentation once all course requirements are completed. CE documents will be emailed a few weeks after the program ends.

Define emotion regulation to change or reduce the intensity of your clients' emotional responses. Effectively communicate while making requests, increasing a positive relationship, and maintaining the self-respect of your clients. Define crisis survival skills for short-term distress and reality acceptance skills for long-term distress.

How is the DBT Skills online course content different from the workshops that Behavioral Tech offers?

The learning outcomes of the in-person Skills Training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy: The Essentials, provided by Behavioral Tech are similar to the learning outcomes of our DBT Skills online course. When determining which training approach might be best, you should consider your learning style and the training resources available for you. Some practitioners prefer to learn in a workshop environment, while others prefer the flexibility of an online program. Some practitioners may not be able to travel and find that online training is the only option available to them. Both the in-person and online courses are an introduction to DBT Skills and are not intended to teach the full DBT treatment model or how to develop a full DBT program.

What is the enrollment process for DBT Comprehensive?

Anyone wishing to participate in the DBT Comprehensive online training program must first register for their pathway and pay the program fee. You will receive an email confirming your payment which includes a link to complete your Enrollment Application form. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis in order to review your eligibility for the pathway. You will be notified of your acceptance via email within 2 weeks. Enrollment is not complete until you complete and submit the Enrollment Application form. When registering, you can select from multiple start dates, as shown on the program enrollment website. Please note that the Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways have limited start dates and participant/team numbers compared to the Foundational pathway, so early application is encouraged.

Do you allow late registrations?

The last day to register for the DBT Skills course is the Monday following the course launch date. Courses are offered frequently, so if you miss your desired registration deadline, you will be able to register for the next course offering. The last day to register for the DBT Comprehensive program is stated on the program enrollment webpage; however, late registrations may be allowed on a space-available basis.

What happens if I have to miss days or weeks of training in DBT Comprehensive?

All participants are expected to meet the course completion requirements in order to receive a letter of completion and continuing education credit. Depending on which portion(s) of the program you miss, you may have several options available to you to still meet the completion requirements and earn a letter of completion; however, continuing education boards have specific standards for attendance, so missing portions of training may jeopardize your ability to receive continuing education credit. If you know in advance that you will miss a meeting or consultation, please advise your team and your DBT expert trainer. Remember, you DO NOT have to complete the weekly online coursework at a single sitting. You can take your time within each week, but please don't fall too far behind because we cannot provide extensions. You will have the most success in the program if you stay current with the weekly online lessons, readings, and exercises and participate in the discussion forum. In addition, participants must attend their weekly DBT consultation team meetings, regardless of which learning pathway they are enrolled.
