Do I need to be online at a specific time?

You don't need to be online at a specific time! You can log in and out at a time that suits you and learn at your own pace. If your course has a forum, trainers will be online throughout the week to answer questions, but please allow a couple of days for your questions to be answered.

What happens if I miss a week or fall behind?

All our courses are self-paced. If you miss a week, or fall behind, don't worry. You can catch up at a time that suits you! Each course has 12 months access, and this bonus time can be used to catch up on any missed work. You can find out when your course access finishes by looking in "My Dashboard." If you are experiencing extenuating circumstances, you may be eligible for a deferral. We welcome participants from all over the world. All course content is accessed online, meaning you have 24/7 access to your course, no matter where you are located. Please note, courses are only offered in English.

Can I get documentation that I participated in this training?

Each participant who meets all of the course completion requirements will receive a letter of completion at the end of the program. You will receive an email upon completion that the document is available to be downloaded in 'My Dashboard'. This will include the course name, your name, and the dates of the program. Participants seeking continuing education (CE) credit will receive CE documentation once all course requirements are completed. CE documents will be available in your Dashboard a few weeks after the program ends.

How does the forum work?

The forum is designed to provide you with expert support as you learn. You can ask questions about the course material and share experiences as you develop new skills. Both the trainers and your fellow course participants can reply, providing a rich community of learners. The trainers will be online during the week to answer questions, but please allow a few days for replies. Just note that trainers are active in the forum during the course, but not during the extra access period at the end of your course. We will notify you via email when the forum is closing.

Will the DBT Comprehensive online program count toward the requirements to become a certified DBT therapist?

Completing the DBT Comprehensive online program does not automatically certify you in DBT. The DBT-Linehan Board of Certification (the only certification board approved by Dr. Linehan) does not list any specific, approved training programs for certification. Instead they acknowledge that DBT Training can be obtained in a variety of ways, and they encourage those applying for certification to let them know where they received training. Certification in DBT is a separate, voluntary process that can be pursued once all the prerequisites for certification are met. We can confirm that our DBT Comprehensive online program does satisfy key criteria needed for DBT-LBC certification. In the end, our impression is that at this time the DBT-LBC is more concerned with a potential applicant’s mastery of the content covered in a training and the CE hours obtained than the specific training that they have gone through. This is the independent group that sets the standards and manages the process for individual certification and DBT program accreditation.

What is the mentor requirement for the DBT Foundational pathway?

Foundational pathway only What is a Foundational Mentor? A DBT Foundational mentor is an experienced DBT team member who completed Intensive/Comprehensive training at least 2 years ago and agrees to meet regularly with a Foundational participant to provide support and corrective feedback. Does everyone who takes the online Foundational course need to have a mentor? No. The requirement to have a mentor is specific to those participants who are enrolled in the Foundational pathway. Participants enrolled in the Intensive or Intensive Plus pathways do not need to have a mentor. Why are Foundational participants required to have a mentor? The Foundational learning pathway is intended for persons who are joining or are current members of established and functioning DBT teams with comprehensively-trained, senior members. Upon completion of the 12-week online course, each Foundational participant must continue developing and applying their DBT knowledge and skills under the guidance of their mentor. In the Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways, this guidance and mentorship is provided via the DBT consultation sessions with the DBT expert. What are the qualifications to serve as a mentor? To be a mentor, the senior DBT team member will: Have completed Intensive training (or a comprehensive equivalent) Ensure that the Participant is oriented to their role on the DBT Consultation Team and is a functioning member of their team Meet with the Participant regularly (outside of regular Consultation Team meetings) to provide support and corrective feedback as the Participant completes the required readings and homework Agree to serve as Mentor for a minimum of one year What is the time commitment for a mentor? Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways only What is a DBT consultation team? A DBT consultation team is a group of DBT providers who work together to treat clients. A team has 5 to 10 people, and it could include a combination of providers who may have different roles, professional credentials (e.g., psychologists also working on a team with a psychiatrist), and/or work in different locations. Do I need a team to do DBT? Why? Yes, you need a team! The DBT consultation team is a required part of the treatment. In order to be faithful to the DBT model and to truly do DBT, you need to be on a consultation team. You can refer to Marsha Linehan’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder for a description of the important functions that the team serves in this treatment. Why is DBT a team-based treatment? There can be immense pressure on a DBT therapist, often created by clients’ risk of suicide or self-harm. The DBT team is there to make sure that the therapist is not pushed out of doing competent treatment by pressure from the client, from themselves, or from the demands of the program pushing them outside of their limits. How often do people meet with their DBT consultation teams? A DBT consultation team meets every week. This is true regardless of whether they are participating in the DBT Comprehensive Online program or are actively practicing DBT with your patients. What does a typical agenda include for a DBT consultation team meeting? A typical meeting might start with 5-10 minutes of mindfulness practice. The team will spend a few minutes to review issues and tasks from the week before, and then the focus turns to the needs of the team members. They will behaviorally define their problem or question, then ask the team for help assessing or solving the problem. A DBT consultation team meeting might also include video review to aid the development of members’ skills.

Tell me more about the team consultations with a DBT expert

Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways only What is consultation with a DBT expert? During consultation, you are paired with a DBT expert to discuss your clinical, team, and program goals and the challenges you face. The DBT expert is your consultant who provides guidance and recommendations to you and your team. Consultation sessions follow the same basic structure as DBT treatment sessions: the DBT expert collaboratively works with you and your team to set an agenda and prioritize targets. Then, consultation questions related to the targets are developed and clarified. The DBT expert and team then use assessment strategies to gain a clear picture of the clinical, team, or programmatic issue(s). A dialectical approach is then used to determine and implement solutions. Both acceptance and change-based strategies are used to engage the team members in active problem-solving. How often does the DBT expert attend team meetings during the program? The DBT expert will join your team meetings on average every two weeks during the consultation period of your training pathway, but the exact schedule and frequency will vary based on the individual needs and preferences of your team and its members. We have designed the consultation schedules throughout the program to maximise flexibility and ensure that the unique needs of each team are being met.

How will I be placed on a DBT consultation team? The Intensive Plus pathway allows individuals without an existing DBT consultation team to participate in DBT Comprehensive training by matching them into a team with others who need a team. Teams are formed when we match participants to the day and time that is most convenient for them to meet for the weekly team meetings and DBT expert consultations. This is dependent on the total number of participants enrolled in the Intensive Plus pathway, and their availability and timezone, along with our DBT expert trainers availability. We will contact you directly regarding your availability and preference for meeting times. Your start date is not confirmed until we’ve placed you in an online team. Who will be on my team? Your team will consist of others like you who are interested in becoming part of a DBT team. Your team composition may include members from all over the world. Can I change teams? Please contact Psychwire directly to enquire about changing teams or if you need additional support about your participation in the Intensive Plus pathway. What is the time commitment each week?

Participants should expect to spend at least 2.5 hours for each week of content to complete the Comprehensive DBT online training; however, since the program offers three distinct learning pathways, each with their own specific sequence, the actual amount of time will vary. The weekly time commitment may be higher during certain weeks of the program. For example, in the Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways you will need to allow extra time for the consultation sessions with a DBT expert. Is there homework to be completed during the program?

There are readings and exercises woven throughout the program to assist you in practicing your new skills and implementing the lessons. Some of the readings and homework can be completed concurrently with the Foundational online course; other homework cannot be completed until the online course is complete and you are in the additional homework period. There is a document in the library titled Part A Foundational Homework Assignments which you should print out and use as a checklist to tick off the assignments as you complete them.

What is the enrollment process for DBT Comprehensive?

Anyone wishing to participate in the DBT Comprehensive online training program must first register for their pathway and pay the program fee. You will receive an email confirming your payment which includes a link to complete your Enrollment Application form. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis to review your eligibility for the pathway. Once your application is complete, you will be notified of your acceptance and select a start date. Enrollment is not complete until you have been accepted into the pathway you registered for. Please note that the application process for the Intensive and Intensive Plus pathways may take longer compared to the Foundational pathway, so early application is encouraged.

Who is this program intended for?

The program is intended for participation only by persons who have the education and licensing required to deliver mental health treatment and who are committed to working as part of a DBT consultation team. This program is available to graduate students, as long as they meet the application requirements for the pathway to which they are applying. What if I can't attend the whole DBT Comprehensive program, drop out early, or need to defer?

Can international trainees participate?

We welcome participants from all over the world. All course content is accessed online, meaning you have 24/7 access to your course, no matter where you are located. Please note, courses are only offered in English.

What happens if I miss a week or fall behind?

Excessive absences from the DBT consultation team meetings may result in dismissal from the program. Information specific to participants in Intensive and Intensive Plus programs: Participants in the Intensive pathway must attend at least 18 hours of team consultation sessions with the DBT trainer. Participants in the Intensive Plus pathway must attend at least 18 hours of team consultation sessions with their DBT trainer, not including the additional Team Formation training sessions. Intensive Plus participants also need to attend all of the Team Formation sessions.

I’ve already taken the DBT Skills course. How is the Comprehensive DBT online program different from the Skills course?

The DBT Comprehensive Online training program was developed to increase access to rigorous, high-quality training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. The online program is intended to provide comprehensive training via an online learning format. It is intended for mental health providers who want to provide DBT within the context of a full DBT program with all its modes of treatment. In the Comprehensive program, you will learn about structuring individual treatment sessions, targets of treatment, case conceptualization, suicide risk assessment and management, phone coaching, therapist team consultation and other protocols and strategies that are part of DBT. Throughout this remote learning experience, you’ll hone your clinical performance by learning through didactics, detailed demonstrations of treatment, practice, and in-depth interviews of expert DBT therapists that bring to life DBT theory and strategies. You’ll learn how to help clients engage in new behaviors, generate hope and maintain commitment, and troubleshoot and address the problems that may hinder those commitments. The DBT Comprehensive Online training program will enable you to build clinical mastery in the application of DBT and to establish an effective DBT practice. In contrast, the DBT Skills online course has a specific focus on the four DBT skills modules. It is intended for a broader audience who may or may not work with persons who have complex, severe behaviors. Participants who take the online DBT Skills course may go on to teach DBT Skills training groups but are not prepared to provide the full treatment.

Can I get documentation that I participated in this training?

Each participant who meets all of the course completion requirements will receive a letter of completion at the end of the program. You will receive an email upon completion that the document is available to be downloaded in 'My Dashboard'. This will include the course name, your name, and the dates of the program. Participants seeking continuing education (CE) credit will receive CE documentation once all course requirements are completed. CE documents will be available in your Dashboard a few weeks after the program ends.

Can I enroll if the course has already started?

Registrations will stay open for one week after the course has started. However, our courses launch throughout the year so if you’ve missed the first week, you can register for the next course offering.
