The Body Scan for Grief and Loss

Roger Solomon shares how to use EMDR body scan with grief, processing tension while honoring sadness.

From the course
EMDR for Complicated Grief
When we do the body scan with grief, there can be appropriate sadness. What we can say to the client is given that there is the sadness that you feel, scan your body and let me know if there's any other tightness or tension or unusual emotion. And I also wanna say there are gonna be times that there's appropriate sadness and tension that the client feels that's just not gonna clear with bilateral stimulation because it's ecologically appropriate. EMDR is not gonna take away anything the client needs. It's not gonna take away anything that is true, including grief. If the client experiences negative sensations, we'll go right in and process that, continue doing the bilateral stimulation until the tension subsides. Again, this tension may lead to other memories that are starting to come on up, and so we have to make a decision on whether we follow the memories that come up depending on the amount of time that we have. And it's also common during the body scan, positive feelings will come on up. I feel a sense of warmth in my chest. And again, we will do sets of bilateral stimulation to enhance that.
