Do You See, Hear Or Sense Thoughts

Russ Harris explains how to adapt defusion exercises to suit the different ways clients experience their thoughts.

People experience their thoughts in different ways. Some people hear their thoughts, other people see their thoughts and some people just kind of sense their thoughts. So we need to be aware of this. We often talk about that voice in your head and listening into your thoughts but there are some people that do not have a voice in their head and cannot hear their thoughts in any way. Some act exercises are very visual and ask you to visualize and imagine pictures in your head But at least ten percent of the population struggles with visualization. I'm in that ten percent myself. And about one percent of the population is aphantasic. They've got no capacity to visualize at all. Very very important that we adapt the diffusion exercises that we do so that they fit the client. If you have a client that finds it hard to hear their thoughts then you wouldn't be pushing the auditory exercises. If you have a client that finds it hard to see their thoughts, you wouldn't be pushing the visual exercises. There's many alternatives for every exercise we do.
