DBT Skills for Adolescents and Families Course Information

Who can take the course?

This course is designed for mental health professionals, those who are licensed, interning or studying in the field, both undergraduate and postgraduate.  This can include, but is not limited to counselors, coaches, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, GPs, OTs, social and youth workers.  


Learning Objectives for DBT Skills for Adolescents and Families course

  • Describe the rationale, structure and targets for skills training

  • Discuss methods about how to engage and manage skills groups with teens and families

  • Identify how to apply orientation and commitment strategies to teens and families;

  • Describe the biosocial theory of emotional dysregulation among youth

  • Identify the rationale and methods of teaching mindfulness skills

  • Describe how to teach distress tolerance skills

  • Discuss the adolescent-family dialectical dilemmas, dialectical thinking and acting and how to teach validation and behavior change strategies to teens and parents (walking the middle path skills)

  • Identify methods of teaching emotion regulation skills

  • Identify examples of how to effectively teach interpersonal effectiveness skills 

  • Identify how to provide skills coaching in individual, group, parent and family sessions

Satisfactory Completion  

Learners must listen to each self-directed audio recording while following along with the visual slides and complete an evaluation form to receive a certificate of completion. Your chosen sessions must be viewed in their entirety.  Partial credit of individual sessions is not available. For Enduring APA and New York Boards of the Professions credits, you are also required to pass a posttest with a score of at least 80%.  If you are seeking continuing education credit for a specialty not listed below, it is your responsibility to contact your licensing/certification board to determine course eligibility for your licensing/certification requirement.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Amedco is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Amedco maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 12.00 GENERAL continuing education credits.

Is this course approved for CPD in Australia?

AHPRA is the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and governs multiple occupations including psychologists, doctors and nurses. The different governing bodies under the AHPRA umbrella have their own specific set of guidelines to be followed by their members, and educational institutions such as Psychwire are not involved in this process.

How long can I expect to work on the course material per week?

Each week will take between 1 ½ and 3 hours.  


Do I need to be online at a specific time?

You don't need to be online at a specific time! You can log in and out at a time that suits you and learn at your own pace.

If your course has a forum, trainers will be online throughout the week to answer questions, but please allow a couple of days for your questions to be answered.


What happens if I miss a week or fall behind?

All our courses are self-paced. If you miss a week, or fall behind, don't worry. You can catch up at a time that suits you!

Each course has 12 months access, and this bonus time can be used to catch up on any missed work. You can find out when your course access finishes by looking in "My Dashboard."

When will I receive my DBT Skills for Adolescents Training Manual e-book?

Your DBT Skills for Adolescents Training Manual will be available on your course library as a downloadable PDFs on the course start date.


Can I get documentation that I participated in this training?

Each participant who meets all of the course completion requirements will receive a letter of completion at the end of the program. You will receive an email upon completion that the document is available to be downloaded in 'My Dashboard'. This will include the course name, your name, and the dates of the program. 

Participants seeking continuing education (CE) credit will receive CE documentation once all course requirements are completed. CE documents will be available in your Dashboard a few weeks after the program ends.


How does the forum work?

The forum is designed to provide you with expert support as you learn. You can ask questions about the course material and share experiences as you develop new skills. Both the trainers and your fellow course participants can reply, providing a rich community of learners.

The trainers will be online during the week to answer questions, but please allow a few days for replies. Just note that trainers are active in the forum during the course, but not during the extra access period at the end of your course. We will notify you via email when the forum is closing.
