Dr. Elias Aboujaoude is an internationally recognized psychiatric researcher, clinician and author. He is a professor of clinical psychiatry at Stanford University, where he leads the Anxiety Disorders Section and the OCD Clinic. He also heads the Program in Internet, Health and Society at Cedars‑Sinai Medical Center. His areas of expertise include the spectrum of impulsive and compulsive disorders, and the interface between psychology and technology. His research explores both the psychological risks of technology (e.g. smartphone addiction, cyberbullying, social‑media narcissism, AI‑mediated discrimination) and technology as a vessel for therapeutic change (e.g. video, VR and AI care to increase access to treatment).
He published the first large international study of problematic internet use in 2006 and co-founded Silicon Valley’s first remote‑treatment mental‑health startup. His 2011 book Virtually You: The Dangerous Powers of the e‑Personality offered a prescient warning about the psychological toll of runaway online technologies. His writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, and The Financial Times, and his work has been covered by The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Newsweek, NPR, CNN, ABC, NBC, and the BBC. He has lectured in more than 20 countries.
