Dr. Janina Fisher is a clinical psychologist, author, teacher, and international authority in the field of trauma treatment. She has treated individuals, couples, and families for over four decades, with her substantial clinical experience contributing to the development of her own treatment model, Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST), a parts-based model for complex trauma that is now taught around the world.
Dr. Fisher is the author of several influential texts on trauma treatment, including Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors and, with Pat Ogden, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment. Her most recent book, Embracing Our Fragmented Selves: A Workbook for Trauma Survivors and Therapists, translates her approach into practical form, with tools for identifying trauma-related symptoms, working with wounded and protective parts, and building the capacity for self-compassion that she regards as central to recovery.
In addition to her own expansive body of work, Dr. Fisher has collaborated with a number of other notable experts in trauma and its treatment. She was a long-time faculty member at The Trauma Center, founded by Bessel van der Kolk, and a founding faculty member of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, where she collaborated with Pat Odgen. She is an Advisory Board member of the Trauma Research Foundation, a Patron of the John Bowlby Centre in London, and a former instructor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Fisher lectures and teaches internationally on integrating neurobiological research and newer trauma treatment approaches into traditional psychotherapy. In her teaching, she works from detailed case material, showing clinicians how the model operates session by session with clients whose presentations are often complex and longstanding.
