To get a sense of what engaging looks like in everyday practice, take a look at this next sequence. It involves Dr. David Rosengrener behavioral health specialist, and his patient, Karen, you'll notice straight away that Karen's not that happy to be there. I took a look at the skills that Doctor. Rosen was using. And I counted a couple of questions, but mostly he was using reflections. And these skills are noted in the demos as they unfold in the course to follow, just take a note of them and observe what the impact of the skills are on both the patient and the relationship with the practitioner. Well, Karen, thanks for coming in today. I, I wanna just take a moment to sort of explain what we're doing here. Or at least let me, even before I start with that, what's your understanding of what it is we're doing here today? What's my understanding of it? Mhmm. Well, I've been on this medication that's been helping. And now it's not helping. And they're saying I need to try an alternative. I need to do something a little different. I'm in pain. So what can you do about that? That's why I'm here. Mhmm. Yeah. So it feels like they're sending you here to do something other than what works? Correct. Yeah. So why would you wanna put time into that? I don't want to be in pain. Yeah. And the medication's been working. Yeah. Yeah. So it makes perfect sense. You want what works. And I I don't know the big picture of you in your life here. So I'd like to if we could just take a few moments, I wanna hear about the pain and what's going on there to start with, but I also wanna get the big picture of who you are. So let's start with The pain. Tell me about the osteoarthritis. When did the start, and where is it impacting you the most? Well, it came on kind of gradually. And once it hit, didn't really realize what's going on until I went to, my physician, and he sent me to a specialist. And next thing I know, I have osteoarthritis And it has been it's progressed so quickly in the pain. It's unbelievable. And and the medication was what was helping. I can't sleep. I wasn't eating well. Got the medication, and I was doing better. Yeah. And, It's been quite a time that they've been giving me the medication, and I know they've changed things in it. I don't know. It's been helping. Mhmm. And the frustration for me is that All I think about is, I guess I'm gonna be in more pain again. If you don't want to go back there, you know what that's like. Yes, I do. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
