Dr. Katherine Shear is an internist and psychiatrist who is well-known for her pioneering research in the grief field. She is Director of the Center for Complicated Grief, based at Columbia University, and Marion E. Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia School of Social Work and Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia.

Dr. Shear, who has studied grief for 25 years, is the creator of the proven efficacious psychotherapy, Complicated Grief Therapy, which is designed to facilitate adaptation to loss.

She is the author or co-author of more than 200 publications, and she has delivered presentations and training in CGT worldwide. Her work has been funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the United States Department of Defense.

Dr Shear and her research have been featured by media outlets such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and many others.

She has served on numerous advisory councils and boards, including the World Health Organization’s ICD11 Working Group on Mood and Anxiety Disorders and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
