AMSR for Inpatient Settings offers busy and often pressured health facilities an easily adopted and effective framework for health practitioners working with patients at differing levels of suicide risk.
This deeply absorbing and engaging online course guides participants step by step through the AMSR risk formulation to assist health practitioners build both competence and confidence with patients who may be at risk of suicide.
Health practitioners will learn how to identify the warning signs, respond compassionately and effectively, and most importantly, develop a collaborative management plan with patients to assist in reducing the risk of suicide with their patients.
AMSR offers health and mental health practitioners a structured framework utilizing research-informed interventions and strategies that are easy to learn and apply. Over 100,000 clinicians and 2,000 health care systems in the United States alone have taken an AMSR course.
Course participants will experience beautifully crafted video lessons and compelling demonstrations of clinicians working with clients that show examples of how to work with the AMSR risk formulation across a range of patient presentations. Participants will also have access to a digital library that allows them to download useful resources.
There are four parts of the AMSR for Inpatient Settings course and each takes around two hours, completed at a time that suits individual practitioners. It’s been designed to be a highly practical and enjoyable online training journey that helps build practitioner competence and confidence in dealing with the often challenging experience of assisting patients at risk of suicide.

Manage your own emotional reactions to suicide and reduce practitioner fear
Develop a shared perspective and build rapport with your patients
Define basic terms related to suicide risk
Describe the phenomenology of suicide
Demonstrate an understanding of warning signs, precipitating factors, risk and protective factors
Integrate a risk assessment for suicide risk early in a clinical interview and continue to collect assessment information on an ongoing basis
Elicit risk and protective factors
Elicit suicidal ideation, intent, plans, and related behavior
Look for other signs of suicide risk including asking others in your patients day to day life
Obtain records and information from providers and support persons as appropriate
Using a risk formulation to make a collaborative decision regarding recovery-oriented treatment planning
Identifying risk status and risk state in your patients
Identifying available resources for your patient’s treatment plan
Identifying potential triggers for your patients such as relapse or conflict in close relationships
Collaboratively develop an emergency plan that assures safety and conveys the message that the patient’s safety is not negotiable
Develop a written treatment and services plan that addresses the patient’s immediate, acute, and continuing suicidal ideation and risk for suicidal behavior
Coordinate and work collaboratively with other treatment and service providers in an interdisciplinary team approach
Develop policies and procedures for following patients closely, including taking reasonable steps to be proactive
This AMSR for Inpatient Settings training is designed for mental health professionals worldwide. Upon completion, you'll receive an official certificate that may be submitted to relevant registration or licensing bodies for continuing professional development, where applicable.
