Professor Douglas Bernstein has made a pivotal contribution to the study of psychology for over 50 years. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois and Courtesy Professor of Psychology at the University of South Florida. He is also a teaching consultant at Ecole de Psychologues Praticiens in Paris.

Professor Bernstein’s research and clinical interests have spanned the whole spectrum of psychology over the years, with anxiety being one of his many specialized areas. In recent times he has developed an interest in the science-practice gap that affects clinical psychological practice, as detailed in his book Introduction to Clinical Psychology: Bridging Science and Practice.

Much of Professor Bernstein’s career has been devoted to education. He is the author of a number of seminal textbooks, including Essentials of Psychology, Psychology and Teaching Psychology: A Step by Step Guide. He is the founder of the American Psychological Society's Preconference Institute on the Teaching of Psychology and between 1980 and 2013, he was Chairman of the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology.
