Anne Buist has more than 30 years of experience as a clinician and researcher working in the field of women's mental health. Her particular expertise is in postpartum psychiatric illness and perinatal psychiatry.
She has worked as a director of mother-baby units for much of her career. She also works with various bodies, including protective services, on cases of abuse, kidnapping, infanticide, and murder. Dr Buist is also internationally renowned for her ground-breaking research into the use of antidepressants by breastfeeding women.
Dr Buist is the Chair of Women's Health at Austin Health, part of the University of Melbourne, a position she has held since 2006. Other notable career achievements include being Director of Psychiatry at Mercy Hospital for Women, Melbourne, and being Director of the Beyondblue postnatal depression program. She was also a member of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women's Health from 1996 to 1999.
Dr Buist has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and the book Psychiatric Disorders Associated With Childbirth. She is also a fiction writer and has published several novels. She is regularly featured in mainstream media for her work.
