Dr Isabel Fernandez is a leading clinical psychologist renowned for her work with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. She is Director of the Psychotraumatology Research Center of Milan.
As a proponent of EMDR, an emerging type of psychotherapy employed mainly for treating post-traumatic stress and related disorders, Dr Fernandez has directed and organized interventions for mass disasters, such as the Pirelli Tower plane crash in Milan in 2002, and in the last large four earthquakes in Italy.
Dr Fernandez has worked with civil defense, military and law enforcement providing psychological support for emergency workers. She also has particular expertise in the post-traumatic reactions of children following mass disasters.
Dr Fernandez trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and has been on the faculty of the Italian Cognitive Behavioral Association for nearly 20 years. She has worked as a consultant psychologist at Niguarda Hospital, Milan, and has published widely on the subject of EMDR and more. Dr Fernandez is president of the EMDR European Association.
