Dr Timothy R. Levine is a communications expert whose area of focus is topics related to deception, interpersonal communication, persuasion and social influence, cross-cultural communication and social science research methods.

He is Distinguished Professor and Chair of Communication Studies at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr Levine is the author of the acclaimed book Duped, which asks the question: why are human beings so easily deceived? The book also subverts ideas about how lies and falsehoods can be detected.

Additionally, he has published more than 140 refereed journal articles, detailing original research in communication studies and deception research.

A highly innovative and engaged figure in communication studies, Dr Levine is also the creator of the truth-default theory, an influential communication theory that offers a framework for understanding veracity and deception detection among humans.

His research has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Defense and the FBI.
