Jay Van Bavel is a renowned psychologist and social neuroscientist. He is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Neural Science at New York University, an affiliate at the Stern School of Business in Management and Organizations, and Director of the Social Perception and Evaluation Lab. He is also a Senior Scientist at the NeuroLeadership Institute, and Editor-in-Chief of the NeuroLeadership Journal.
Van Bavel’s expertise and ongoing research centres on how our minds and brains are influenced by collective concerns, such as group identities and mentalities, moral values and political beliefs.
His work applies a social neuroscience perspective to social motivation and co-operation, implicit bias, moral judgment, decision-making and group regulation.
Such research has proven particularly pertinent in the age of fake news, with Van Bavel frequently writing for mainstream media outlets, or offering comment, on the subject. He has written for the likes of the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and Scientific American, and is a columnist for Science Magazine. He has also published many academic papers.
Van Bavel has won numerous awards for his work and research, including the Young Investigator Award from the Society for Social Neuroscience and the Young Scholars Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
