Dr Christine A Courtois is recognized as an expert in the treatment of those experiencing complex forms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD/CPTSD), particularly with adult survivors of incest and other forms of sexual and repetitive victimization.

Dr Courtois retired from her thirty-five years of outpatient clinical practice in 2016 and inpatient psychotherapy. She was co-founder and clinical and training director of The CENTER: Post-traumatic Disorders Program in Washington, DC from 1990 to 2006. She continues to offer consultation and training across trauma-related topics. Dr Courtois' many books are classics in their fields, particularly Healing the Incest Wound. Her interests include the politics of incest and its place as a social issue and the training of therapists to treat complex trauma.

Dr Courtois is a past-president of the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 56, Psychological Trauma and served two terms on the Board of Directors of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). She has also been active in the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD).

Dr Courtois was Chair of the APA’s PTSD Guidelines Development Panel for the Treatment of PTSD in Adults (2017) and a member of the APA’s Working Group on Investigation of Memories of Childhood Abuse (2006).
