Dr David M. Allen is an esteemed psychiatrist and psychotherapist with expertise in the role of family dysfunction in behavioral problems and its impact on mental health.

Dr Allen is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, where he spent 16 years as Director of Psychiatric Residency Training. He also worked in private practice for 13 years.

Among Dr Allen's books is a self-help book for adult children of problem parents, Coping with Critical, Demanding, and Dysfunctional Parents: Powerful Strategies to Help Adult Children Maintain Boundaries and Stay Sane, and a critique of current psychiatric and psychotherapeutic practices, How Dysfunctional Families Spur Mental Disorders: A Balanced Approach to Resolve Problems and Reconcile Relationships.

Dr Allen has published many articles and book chapters, and he is a former editor of the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration. He is a co-editor of Groupthink in Science and a former treasurer of the Association for Research in Psychiatric Disorders.
