Dr Michael Perlis is a world-renowned expert in the field of Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BSM) and insomnia. A researcher with decades of experience, he is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Nursing, and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Perlis’s research interests include the cognitive and physiological factors in acute and chronic insomnia, the effects of sedative-hypnotics and placebos, the efficacy and dissemination and implementation of CBT-I, alternative treatment approaches for insomnia, and sleep and depression.

He is a co-author of the first-ever textbook on BSM, as well as the author of several other key texts on the subject, including a CBT-I treatment manual and a larger text summarizing all BSM treatments.

Dr Perlis also serves on the editorial boards of Sleep; Journal of Sleep Research; Sleep Medicine Research; and Behavioral Sleep Medicine. He has given workshops around the world.

He is one of the five founding members of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine and served as its first president.
