Dr Vedat Şar is a well-known name in psychology in both his native Turkey and across the world. A psychiatrist, clinician, researcher and educator, he specializes in dissociative disorders and trauma-related disorders. He is Professor of Psychiatry and Chair of Department in the School of Medicine at Koç University in Istanbul.

Dr Şar’s research interests extend to trauma that stems from childhood, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder and the range of treatment options for these conditions. He has made pivotal contributions to the understanding of dissociative disorders.

Dr Şar has published more than one hundred papers in peer-reviewed journals, many book chapters and is co-author of the books, Trauma and Dissociation in a Cross-Cultural Perspective and Global Perspectives on Dissociative Disorders. He was President of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation between 2007 and 2008 and President of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies from 2013 to 2015.

In 2015, Dr Şar was honored by the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and, in 2015, was named among Turkey’s 150 most influential scientists.
