Professor Mark I. Hayward is a practicing clinical psychologist and Director of Research at the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He is also an Honorary Professor of Psychology at the University of Sussex.
Professor Hayward developed the Sussex Voices Clinic (SVC), a community-based clinical service within the UK’s National Health Service. SVC seeks to increase access to evidence-based therapies for patients who are distressed by hearing voices, irrespective of a patient’s age and diagnosis. Professor Hayward supervises the delivery of therapies that have been developed and evaluated within SVC.
Professor Hayward conducts research focused on cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness principles. Based on the latest research and backed by his own clinical experience, Professor Hayward co-authored the self-help manual, Overcoming Distressing Voices. In addition, he developed and delivered the Psychosis Revisited workshop for mental health service providers.
Professor Hayward is dedicated to enhancing understanding of voice hearing experiences and increasing access to therapies to reduce associated distress. He has been honoured with a Distinguished Contribution to Professional Psychology Award from the British Psychological Society.
