Dr Ronald Levant is a giant in gender research, contributing to psychological study in America across a career that has spanned several decades. His chief areas of expertise are men and masculinity, fatherhood and family, and gender psychology. He is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The University of Akron.
Among Dr Levant’s key contributions has been the empirical foundation for the Normative Male Alexithymia hypothesis, which addresses men's emotional lives. He also developed Alexithymia Reduction Treatment (ART) a brief intervention designed to remediate alexithymia that assists men in engaging in psychotherapy with less reservation.
Dr Levant has developed and appraised many psychological measures of gender-related constructs, including the Male Role Norms Inventory (MRNI), the Normative Male Alexithymia Scale (NMAS) and the Femininity Ideology Scale (FIS).
Dr Levant, a former President of the American Psychological Association, served as Editor of the journal Psychology of Men and Masculinity from 2007 to 2015. He has written, co-authored or edited no fewer than 19 books, from the highly influential Between Father and Child to the more recent work, The Tough Standard: The Hard Truths About Masculinity and Violence. He has also written hundreds of peer-reviewed articles for scientific journals.
Dr Levant has won several awards for his groundbreaking work, including the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research.
