Dr. Chris Butler, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, is Professor of Primary Care in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Professorial Fellow at Trinity College, and is the Clinical Director of the University of Oxford Primary Care Clinical Trials Unit. His principal areas of research include common infections and health behavior change, with a particular focus on adapting Motivational Interviewing for health care.
Dr. Chris Butler trained in medicine at the University of Cape Town. He studied Clinical Epidemiology at The University of Toronto and completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Rollnick. In this study he developed and evaluated behavior change counseling, conducting qualitative research into patients' perceptions since this time he has published over 300 articles. Dr. Chris Butler has led or helped to lead, over 20 randomized clinical trials, 13 qualitative studies, and four large data studies. He co-authored, with Dr. William Miller and Dr. Stephen Rollnick, the bestseller Motivational Interviewing in Health Care: Helping Patients Change Behavior and has continued to lead research in this field, recognized for his work applying the principles of Motivational Interviewing into health care.
Some further key roles that Dr. Chris Butler serves in include the Director of the NIHR MedTech and In Vitro Diagnostics Cooperative and Senior Investigator for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). He also practices as a GP in South Wales for the Cwm Taf University Health Board.
